The special study in China led him to develop a theory of
evolution which cannot be dismissed as an altogether blind and
purely material process. With the advent of mankind it acquired a
mind and heart. Although the growth of the world is in continuing
movement of God’s creative action, the world has now reached that
point in history where mankind’s role can be decisive. This
intelligent, free creature, product of evolution, has become capable
of obstructing, perhaps destroying--at least on this planet--the
very process which produced him.
For evolution to have a future on Earth, it is imperative
that each man and woman extend his and her responsibility beyond
their immediate concerns to the destiny of all mankind and their
planet in which we have our roots. “There is now incontrovertible
evidence that mankind has just entered the greatest period of change
the world has ever known...The task before us now, if we would not
perish, is to build the Earth.” |
